Equine Facilitated Wellness and Equine Assisted Therapy Programs
What is Equine Facilitated Wellness?
Equine Facilitated Wellness incorporates horses experientially for healing, growth and learning. It is a collaborative effort between an equine professional and a mental health professional or other specialized professionals working with the client and horses to address the client's goals.
Equine Facilitated Wellness is a form of Animal Assisted Therapy which incorporates interactions with specially selected and trained horses into a healing setting and relationship. All interactions are carefully supervised and are designed in accordance with each client’s therapeutic needs and objectives. Clients can have a variety of mental / emotional challenges including: trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, history of abuse, grief, loss and life transitions. We work with children as well as adults.
The model is based on genuine, unconditional positive regard and empathy for the client and the entire team including the horse, equine professional and mental health practitioner or educator and volunteers. The horses are far more than a "tool” - they are a key part of the team who bring themselves and their innate nature to the counselling relationship for therapeutic growth and learning.
This is an experiential approach with the main focus on the client-horse connection. There is a Our Therapists significant body of research showing the value of this connection for healing.
We also offer team building workshops.
As research advances in this field, Prance staff will continue to be leaders in participating with the development of standards, scope of practice and support of best practice, professional training and certification in Canada.
What do you actually do in an EFW session at PRANCE??
Individual sessions are delivered either in the indoor arena, barn aisle, heated training room or private office, outdoor paddocks, round ring or on our nature trails. Sessions are tailored to the specific needs of the individual client or group meaning activities can vary greatly. Sessions may involve conscious grooming, groundwork with the horses and awareness practices (often nature based) with or without a horse. The focus will generally be therapeutic and include strategies for skill building, self-regulation and personal growth and development.
